PM Modi to Launch Micron's Cutting-Edge Semiconductor Facility in Gujarat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 27 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the state-of-the-art semiconductor facility by Micron Technology located in Sanand, Gujarat, this Saturday. This facility boasts one of the largest cleanrooms in the world dedicated to chip manufacturing.
This development is a significant leap towards enhancing India's semiconductor manufacturing proficiency.
The initial phase of the cleanroom at the Sanand site covers an impressive area of five lakh square feet.
In a statement prior to the inauguration, Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President, and CEO of Micron Technology, highlighted that the construction of the cleanroom required three and a half times the amount of steel used in the Eiffel Tower and concrete comparable to that of 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Cleanrooms play a critical role in semiconductor production where accuracy is paramount. Even the smallest airborne particle or a slight temperature fluctuation can disrupt the manufacturing process.
According to the Micron team, “A cleanroom is significantly cleaner than a surgical theatre. Just a single hair can compromise a chip, necessitating the utmost level of cleanliness.”
To maintain this cleanliness, air is filtered and flows uniformly from the ceiling to the floor.
The flooring is slightly elevated to facilitate air circulation underneath, ensuring consistent cooling, power supply, and data operations.
Temperature and humidity levels are meticulously regulated, as even a one-degree Celsius change can impact the operation of memory testing machines, which generate considerable heat.
Robust backup systems for power, cooling, and air circulation guarantee uninterrupted operations in case of any primary system failure. Mehrotra expressed gratitude for the support from the government.
“The Government of India, under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, has extended substantial support and enacted policies that encourage increased investment. The Sanand project stands as a hallmark initiative, and we are honored to collaborate with both the Central and Gujarat Governments in its advancement,” he stated.
Engineered in India to align with Micron's global standards, the Sanand facility strengthens India's footprint in the semiconductor industry.
Micron has had a presence in India since 2019, operating research and development centers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, employing approximately 24,000 individuals.
Teams based in India have been instrumental in global innovation, including the design of advanced DRAM memory products in partnership with teams located in the United States.
