Micron Technology's ATMP Facility: A Landmark Moment for India's Semiconductor Industry
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 28 (NationPress) The India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) expressed its congratulations to the government and US-based Micron Technology on the momentous opening of an advanced ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, officiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, who attended the inauguration, characterized the occasion as a pivotal moment in India's semiconductor evolution, stating, “This is more than just the launch of a facility; it symbolizes India’s growing stature as a significant and credible contender in the realm of advanced semiconductor design and manufacturing.”
Chandak reflected on the historical significance of the event, noting the Prime Minister's emphatic phrase: 'India is ready, India is reliable, and India delivers' — a strong affirmation of the nation's ambition to cultivate a top-notch chip ecosystem.
Micron's substantial investment of Rs 22,516 crore (around $2.75 billion) is one of the largest pledges from a global semiconductor giant in India's manufacturing sector, complementing their existing design centers in the country.
This facility will be responsible for the production of DRAM, NAND, and Solid-State Drive (SSD) products — essential memory components that power technologies such as AI systems, high-performance computing, smartphones, data centers, automotive electronics, and the next generation of digital infrastructure.
The ability to manufacture memory chips is of strategic importance, as only a select few countries possess this capability.
The association highlighted, “With the surge in global demand — particularly fueled by AI applications — and ongoing short-term supply challenges, establishing a memory manufacturing presence in India alongside Micron’s design centers is not only timely but transformative.”
This memory plant, along with Micron’s existing memory chip design centers and the forthcoming Chip OSAT facilities set to launch this year, will significantly bolster India's semiconductor capabilities, enhancing our design-led manufacturing base and export potential.
Expected to create around 5,000 direct jobs and over 15,000 indirect employment opportunities, the Sanand facility is set to foster a skilled semiconductor workforce.
The successful establishment of Micron’s ATMP plant signifies the effective realization of India’s semiconductor policy goals into actionable manufacturing capabilities.
