Congress MP Calls for CBI Investigation into Punjab Official's Suicide
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 22 (NationPress) Manish Tewari, the Congress Member of Parliament representing Chandigarh, has urged for a CBI investigation into the tragic suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, who was the District Manager of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation. This call for inquiry arises as opposition parties ramp up their criticisms of the AAP-led government in Punjab regarding this unfortunate event.
Randhawa allegedly accused former Transport Minister Laljit Bhullar of harassment and intimidation. He reportedly ingested Celphos at his home in Amritsar on Saturday.
Prior to his death, Randhawa recorded a poignant 12-second video on his phone, stating, "Kha layi Celphos thuade yaar ne minister Laljit Bhullar de dar ton, hun ni bachda (Your friend has taken poison out of fear from Minister Laljit Bhullar; I won't survive this)."
A complaint lodged by his wife, Upinder Kaur, claimed that the former minister, along with his father and personal assistant, assaulted Randhawa and should be held accountable for abetting his suicide.
In response to the incident, Tewari commented to IANS, "This is a deeply distressing event, and it is essential for the CBI to conduct a thorough investigation into those responsible."
"The trustworthiness of any investigation is demonstrated by the public's confidence in it. In light of the circumstances surrounding this case, it would be prudent for the Punjab government to refer it to the CBI," he added.
Congress leader Udit Raj also condemned the state government, claiming there is rampant corruption under the AAP administration.
"Action is necessary; an investigation is crucial. An official has been driven to take his own life. These individuals are deeply corrupt, with their entire team in Punjab focusing on collecting money for Gujarat and beyond. Since Bhagwant Mann took office, corruption has flourished. Both the BJP and AAP operate on similar corrupt practices," he told IANS.
Meanwhile, the BJP has intensified its critique of the AAP-led government.
Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and other senior party members staged a protest outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's residence in Chandigarh regarding this matter.
On Saturday evening, Jakhar visited the grieving family in Amritsar to offer condolences, promising them full support in the pursuit of justice.
Jakhar further asserted that Chief Minister Mann has lost the moral authority to remain in office. He noted that while previously people in Punjab were victims of extortion and gang-related activities, the situation has escalated to the point where even government officials are compelled to take drastic actions due to alleged demands from those in power.
The State BJP Chief described this incident as "akin to the brazen murder of a government officer, and a case should be filed immediately against Minister Bhullar, leading to his arrest."
Jakhar asserted that this incident reveals the reality behind the state government's claims of "unwavering honesty." He stated that this is not a cabinet but rather a "gang of ministers."
He highlighted that prior ministers, including Vijay Singla, Fauja Singh Sarari, and now Laljit Bhullar, exemplify the true nature of the AAP-led Punjab government, adding that Chief Minister Mann has become a "burden" on his position.
