This incident has ignited serious discussions regarding security breaches and the safety of individuals in custody.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan, Aman was strangled after the assailants, Jaidev and Jitender, violently struck his head against a wall due to an ongoing feud.
Aman, 24 years old and hailing from Govindpuri, was involved in a 2024 attempted murder case where Jitender and his sibling were the complainants, as stated by police.
On that fateful Thursday, Aman was overpowered and strangled with the assailants' feet, with police reporting that they first slammed his head against the wall, causing significant bleeding from the injury.
Following the alarm raised regarding the assault in the lockup, a blood-soaked Aman was transported to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries en route, according to law enforcement.
The murder transpired in holding cell number 5 of the court complex, where Aman, the two attackers, and other undertrials were held after being brought from Tihar Jail No. 8 for court appearances.
According to a police official, the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over court testimony between Aman and the attackers.
This incident marks the second shocking occurrence in the court complex within two years, which is situated near schools and shopping centers.
Two years ago, the Saket court complex experienced a shooting incident involving a suspended attorney who assaulted a female colleague in broad daylight.
The assailant, Kameshwar Singh, was apprehended later, while the victim sustained minor injuries to her abdomen and arm.
In April 2023, that incident also left a lawyer’s staff member injured in addition to the woman.
