MVA Parties Clash Over Controversial Bill Targeting Unlawful Religious Conversions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 16 (NationPress) Tensions among the factions of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) emerged prominently in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday regarding the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, aimed at combating illegal and coerced religious conversions within the state.
After Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis outlined the Bill's features in the Assembly, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav voiced his endorsement for the legislation.
Conversely, Congress MLAs Nitin Raut and Aslam Shaikh, along with Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh, expressed their opposition, while NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad took a more ambivalent stance on the matter.
During his address, Jadhav emphasized the necessity of a legal structure to prevent unlawful or forced conversions.
“The legislation proposed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is comprehensive and seeks to promote transparency and uphold the rule of law. Comparable regulations are already in place in various other states, making it essential for Maharashtra to adopt similar measures,” he stated.
However, Jadhav cautioned that the enforcement of this law should not infringe upon the religious freedoms enshrined in Article 25 of the Constitution.
He further highlighted the importance of aligning the new law with existing regulations concerning forced marriages or conversions involving minors.
On the other hand, Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh vehemently criticized the Bill, accusing the ruling Mahayuti government of a biased initiative targeting a specific community.
He claimed that the proposed legislation has fostered discontent among minority groups and called for the Bill to be sent to a Joint Select Committee comprising members from both Houses of the state Legislature for further evaluation.
Shaikh contended that the government should not advance legislation purely based on its majority if it encroaches upon constitutional rights related to marriage.
He also challenged the government to publish official statistics if it asserts that widespread religious conversions are occurring in the state.
Rais Shaikh also criticized Bhaskar Jadhav’s support for the Bill, pointing out a contradiction between Jadhav’s concerns about potential misuse and his backing of the legislative proposal.
Meanwhile, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Jitendra Awhad took a more nuanced approach.
He articulated that while forced conversions should be prohibited, there is apprehension that the Bill could be misused to advance the supremacy of a particular ideology under the pretense of safeguarding religious liberty.
The discussion surrounding the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026 underscored the ideological and political rifts among the parties within the Maha Vikas Aghadi during the Assembly session.
