Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Saturday, 20 June directed Director General of Police Rupin Sharma to review the law and order situation in the state and take decisive steps to address the rising number of sexual assault cases against women, with particular concern for minor girls, according to officials at Lok Bhavan. The directive came during a high-level review meeting held at Lok Bhavan in Kohima.
Key Developments from the Review Meeting
Governor Yadav called on the DGP to examine the full scope of assault cases against women and minors and deploy all necessary measures to deal with such crimes effectively. He expressed deep concern over the growing volume of reported incidents and stressed the need for swift, exemplary action against perpetrators.
The Governor underscored the importance of ensuring safety and security for women and children across Nagaland, calling for heightened vigilance, stronger preventive mechanisms, and prompt investigation of every case involving crimes against women and minors.
What the Governor Directed Police to Do
Governor Yadav directed the police department to intensify efforts to curb crimes against women and children, strengthen monitoring and surveillance systems, and ensure that victims receive timely support, protection, and access to justice. He also emphasised the role of public awareness and community participation in preventing such offences and building a safer environment for all citizens.
Reiterating his concern, the Governor stated that crimes against women and children 'must be dealt with firmly and without delay', adding that every possible effort should be made to create a safe and secure environment for all.
Police Briefing and Ongoing Initiatives
DGP Rupin Sharma briefed the Governor on the prevailing situation, the status of ongoing investigations, and various initiatives already underway within the police department to enhance the protection of women and children throughout the state.
Police Advisory on Social Media Misuse
Separately, Nagaland Police issued an advisory urging citizens not to circulate unverified messages, images, videos, or other content on social media platforms, warning that legal action would be initiated against violators.
Issued by the Police Headquarters, the advisory cautioned group administrators and members across all social media platforms to exercise restraint when posting, sharing, or forwarding content. It warned that if any post or material is found to be offensive, misleading, unlawful, or likely to disturb public peace, both the individual and the group administrator would be held liable under applicable law.
Group administrators were specifically reminded of their responsibility to monitor content within their groups and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards. All users were advised to verify information before sharing and to refrain from forwarding content that could incite hatred, violence, panic, or public disorder.
With the Governor now directly engaged on the issue, pressure on Nagaland Police to deliver measurable outcomes on women's safety is set to intensify in the weeks ahead.
