New Delhi/Kohima, July 15 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a case against a Senior Professor of Nagaland University, who is reportedly implicated in bribery and other irregularities related to tender processes, as confirmed by agency sources on Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the CBI, the investigation began on Saturday (July 12) against the accused, Chitta Ranjan Deb, who serves as Senior Professor and Director of IQAC, as well as Dean of the School of Sciences in the Department of Botany at Nagaland University, a central institution.
“Allegations suggest that Deb engaged in various corrupt practices with the intention of inflicting wrongful loss upon Nagaland University while securing personal financial gain through preferential treatment in awarding supply orders for scientific equipment and consumables, in exchange for undue advantages or bribes,” the statement revealed.
On July 12, the CBI conducted searches at multiple locations including Jorhat (Assam), Lumani (Nagaland), and Agartala (Tripura). Subsequent operations led to the seizure of incriminating documents associated with bribery transactions as well as tender-related paperwork from the offices of involved bidders and accused parties.
Deb, 57, a resident of Tripura, began his career at Nagaland University in August 1997 as a lecturer and currently holds the position of Senior Professor and Director of IQAC in the Department of Botany. His academic credentials include a graduation from Tripura University and a postgraduate degree obtained in 1994, followed by a doctoral degree in 2000 from North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
Deb is also actively involved in various national and international academic organizations. Nagaland University, inaugurated on September 6, 1994, is the 13th Central University and the sole central institution in Nagaland, overseeing 76 colleges across the state.
