How is the One District One Product (ODOP) Initiative Transforming Uttar Pradesh's Cities?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lucknow, Jan 27 (NationPress) The One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, a groundbreaking program by the Uttar Pradesh government, has successfully elevated the status of various cities and towns by tapping into their unique capabilities, thus establishing a unique identity for each locality.
The program, which commenced in 2018, has significantly opened a plethora of opportunities for the local populace and has transformed these areas into centers of economic activity.
The outcomes of the ODOP approach are evident in the state’s export statistics. In 2017, the total exports from Uttar Pradesh were recorded at Rs 88,000 crore, with products under the ODOP scheme contributing Rs 58,000 crore.
By 2024, the total export figure soared to Rs 1.86 lakh crore, with the ODOP segment’s share rising to Rs 93,000 crore. Such remarkable growth is a testament to the consistent institutional support provided to the ODOP framework.
This district-centric product strategy has empowered exports at the grassroots level, allowing small-scale producers to integrate seamlessly into global supply chains.
With the primary goal of creating a unique identity for each district, all 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh have seen the emergence and launch of traditional crafts, industries, or indigenous products into international markets with substantial governmental backing.
Notable products such as Moradabad’s brassware, Banaras’s handloom textiles, Firozabad’s glass creations, Kannauj’s perfumes, and Bhadohi’s carpets have received renewed global attention through this targeted strategy.
This initiative has also tackled the persistent issue of regional disparities in industrial development. Previously, economic prosperity was concentrated in a select few urban centers, but following the ODOP initiative, smaller districts and towns have risen as economic hubs. This shift has led to an increase in local job opportunities and a marked reduction in migration.
According to government data, the earnings of artisans and small business owners have seen a considerable boost. The ODOP Skill Development and Toolkit Distribution Scheme has provided extensive training and modern toolkits to numerous artisans. Enhanced access to financing and improved skills have enabled traditional crafts to meet current market demands.
To date, over 1.25 lakh toolkits have been distributed throughout the state, leading to an enhancement in product quality, allowing local goods to penetrate both national and international markets.
Under the ODOP Margin Money Scheme, projects amounting to Rs 6,000 crore have been approved, directly benefiting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This has injected fresh energy into entrepreneurship, especially in rural and semi-urban regions.
