How is the Centre's One District-One Product scheme driving growth across 770 districts?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 23 (NationPress) The Centre's One District- One Product (ODOP) program has significantly expanded, now encompassing over 770 districts as of December 2025, transforming them into thriving economic centers that empower local farmers and artisans to tap into global markets, as highlighted in an official announcement on Friday.
This initiative spotlights one distinctive product per district, providing essential branding, market access, institutional backing, and visibility while uplifting the communities involved. Today, these unique crafts are prominently featured at international trade fairs.
More than 1,200 ODOP products, spanning sectors such as textiles, food, handicrafts, and minerals, are showcased on the digital portal managed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
The initiative has enhanced market connections through digital avenues, including dedicated ODOP storefronts on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and state-level e-commerce platforms, amplifying sales and reach. The success of ODOP is attributed to its adaptable yet structured governance model, driven by the collaborative efforts of Central ministries, state governments, and district administrations.
States and Union Territories choose the products based on the existing ecosystem, and the final selections are communicated to the DPIIT.
Through e-commerce initiatives like the GeM-ODOP Bazaar, India's finest ODOP offerings are presented to broader markets, empowering artisans and expanding market access.
The scheme allocates Rs 5,000 crore in interest-free support, including a minimum of Rs 100 crore per state, to empower artisans and entrepreneurs. Additionally, there has been rapid progress with 29 Unity Malls approved across 27 states.
Launched in 2018, this initiative began in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, known for its brassware craftsmanship. The success experienced there has been replicated nationwide.
Uttar Pradesh, as the pioneering state of the ODOP initiative, has seen a remarkable 76% increase in exports, soaring from Rs 88,967 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 1.71 lakh crore in 2023-24. Projects worth Rs 6,000 crore have been approved under the ODOP margin money scheme, resulting in training for over 1.25 crore ODOP artisans who received modern toolkits.
At the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show (UPITS) 2025, ODOP achieved remarkable national and global recognition, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizing how this scheme has enabled district-specific products from UP to penetrate international markets. The ODOP Pavilion at UPITS 2025 showcased 466 stalls, generating business leads and deals worth Rs 20.77 crore.
