Sachin Pilot slams EC treatment of Opposition MPs, warns of voter exclusion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, alleged that recent developments involving the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the treatment of Opposition Members of Parliament during protests in Delhi had raised grave concerns about the health of democracy in India. Speaking at the Congress War Room in Jaipur, Pilot mounted a sharp attack on what he described as the systematic suppression of democratic dissent.
Detention of Opposition MPs
Pilot criticised the handling of protests led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who were among those demanding accountability from the Election Commission. He alleged that Opposition MPs who sought to meet ECI officials were detained instead of being received for a dialogue — a development he termed 'authoritarianism'.
'Democratic institutions must remain open to dialogue and accountability,' Pilot said, questioning why elected representatives were not permitted to place their concerns before a constitutional body.
Voter Exclusion and 'Votebandi' Warning
Turning to the ongoing electoral roll revision exercise, Pilot alleged that millions of voters were at risk of exclusion, calling it a direct threat to constitutionally guaranteed voting rights. He coined the term 'Votebandi' — drawing an explicit parallel with the 2016 demonetisation — to describe what he characterised as a sweeping disenfranchisement drive. He called for immediate corrective action on electoral roll concerns.
Rajasthan Municipal Polls: Congress Claims Moral Victory
On the recently concluded municipal elections in Rajasthan, Pilot claimed that Congress had, in effect, outperformed the results by securing a higher vote share than the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 'I have no hesitation in saying that the BJP lost despite winning, whereas we won despite losing because we secured a higher vote share,' he said.
Pilot alleged irregularities and administrative interference during the civic polls, stating that complaints had been received from several districts regarding electoral conduct. He added that the party had reviewed outcomes and begun preparations for the upcoming Panchayati Raj elections.
Focus on Rural Rajasthan and DAP Fertiliser Crisis
Pilot said Congress would focus its Panchayat poll campaign on unemployment, farmers' concerns, the implementation of welfare schemes, and an acute shortage of DAP fertiliser in the state. 'There is a complete shortage of DAP fertiliser in Rajasthan. It is being distributed under police protection, yet the government remains indifferent,' he alleged.
He announced a two-month public outreach programme covering villages and mandals across Rajasthan, predicting a 'landslide victory' in the Panchayat polls — momentum he said would carry Congress into the 2028 Rajasthan Assembly elections.
