New Delhi, June 18 (NationPress) Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has conveyed his satisfaction regarding the substantial procurement of goods and services by Uttar Pradesh from the Government e-marketplace (GeM) platforms. He commended the state for its role in promoting the vision of Digital India.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Union Minister noted that the UP government's proactive approach in utilizing GeM portals is likely to motivate other states to adopt similar practices.
He included data illustrating the procurement activities undertaken by the UP government via GeM platforms over the past five years and expressed gratitude for their confidence in the initiative.
The GeM platform is a Central Public Procurement Portal designed to facilitate online acquisition of goods and services by various government entities, including Central and State Government Ministries, Public Sector Undertakings, Autonomous Bodies, and Local Bodies.
In recent years, the platform has experienced significant growth, with the financial year 2024-25 alone recording over 72 lakh purchase orders through GeM, amounting to an impressive Rs 5.43 lakh crore.
Since its inception, the GeM has facilitated purchases exceeding Rs 14 lakh crore through more than 2.9 crore purchase orders. Currently, GeM features over 11,000 product categories and more than 330 service categories.
In his communication with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Piyush Goyal acknowledged the state government for its pivotal role in driving this remarkable expansion.
He also expressed appreciation for the Yogi government for issuing a comprehensive directive on November 26, 2024, which consolidates various procurement-related notifications into a single document, streamlining processes and promoting 100% adoption of GeM.
“This initiative will boost transparency, efficiency, affordability, and the simplicity of the procurement process,” he remarked, emphasizing that it aligns with PM Modi’s vision of GeM as a ‘one-stop marketplace’ for government buyers' diverse needs.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the UP government's approach towards GeM is in harmony with the broader goals of the Digital India mission.
The Union Minister concluded by stating that such initiatives by the UP government will inspire other states to engage in similar procurement practices via the GeM portals.
