He conveyed his best wishes to the Indian Army, veterans, Veeranganas, and their families on Tuesday.
Army Day, celebrated every year on January 15, marks the inception of the Indian Army and honors India's military sovereignty. This day recalls the significant power transition of 1949 when General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Army Chief of India, transferred command to Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, the first Indian Chief Commander of the Legion of Merit.
The theme for this year’s Army Day is “Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena.”
In a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi articulated the nation’s pride in the Indian Army's unyielding bravery, sacrifices, and unparalleled commitment.
He underscored the Army's professional excellence in tackling various challenges and its high service standards.
“Our Army has a rich history of addressing the country’s difficult borders, disaster scenarios, and internal issues. As a well-organized, disciplined, and robust force, the Indian Army has carved out a distinctive identity on the global front,” the PMO statement noted.
The Prime Minister recognized the significant advancements made by the Indian Army in recent years, especially in responding to modern requirements.
“In response to evolving times, the Indian Army is embracing change. Remarkable measures have been implemented over the past decade to bolster military forces, improve the country’s strategic capabilities, and achieve self-reliance in defense production,” the statement highlighted.
“The resolve and determination of our armed forces will be crucial in developing an 'Atmanirbhar' and 'Viksit Bharat',” the statement added.
He expressed faith in the steadfast commitment of Indian soldiers to aid the nation's growth and security.
Honoring the sacrifices of the armed forces, the Prime Minister remarked, “The nation remembers with appreciation the valor, bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of our soldiers in service to 'Maa Bharti'. On this significant occasion of Army Day, on behalf of all citizens, I pay tribute to the courageous martyrs, Veer Naaris, and veterans.”
