'Dhurandhar 2': Political Leaders Split Over Atiq Ahmed's Portrayal and Allegations of ISI Ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The newly premiered film 'Dhurandhar 2' has ignited a political firestorm due to its depiction of the gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and the controversial insinuations regarding his connections with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). This portrayal has elicited a wave of mixed reactions from various political leaders.
Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav commented that cinema often reflects societal incidents, stating, “Films essentially showcase events that unfold in society and present them to the audience. Since Atiq Ahmed served as a Member of Parliament, I have interacted with him in that capacity. If a story like his is being told, it is fitting. The film has received positive feedback from viewers, and I wish the director, producer, and cast all the best, especially as tickets for the film are reportedly being sold in black.”
Conversely, Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai criticized the film, alleging it serves as a vessel for political propaganda.
Rai remarked to IANS, “The BJP has a machinery for propaganda, fabricating films based on their own fictional narratives. They can assert anything about anyone and draw connections as they please.”
Neeraj Kumar, spokesperson for the Janata Dal (United), took a more reserved approach. He expressed that he generally avoids films but highlighted the critical role of the Censor Board in determining what should be screened.
“I do not watch films, nor do I prefer them. However, times have evolved. It is now up to the Censor Board to make these decisions. If something is shown according to the rules, I have no objections. But if an individual, who has been subjected to judicial actions or scrutiny by the Home Ministry, is portrayed in a favorable light, it could be seen as glorifying criminality,” Kumar stated.
Another JD(U) spokesperson, Rajeev Ranjan, noted that comments should be reserved until after viewing the film.
“I have yet to see the film. Movies convey numerous messages, and individuals should be free to express their opinions. However, it would be wise to hold judgment until one has watched it,” he commented.
Shiv Sena representative Shaina NC mentioned that while discussions about the film's propaganda nature may persist, it’s crucial to recognize that Bollywood's primary mission is entertainment.
“The debate on whether this film is propaganda or not can continue, but the essence of Bollywood is to entertain. From an entertainment standpoint, I see no reason to make statements that could incite controversy or offend anyone,” she conveyed.
Meanwhile, UP Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar stated that filmmakers create content based on what they believe audiences will appreciate.
“The government does not produce films. These actors and filmmakers decide what will resonate with viewers and lead to success,” he explained.
The film 'Dhurandhar 2' has incited a significant political discourse due to its representation of Atiq Ahmed and the implications of ties to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, with reactions flowing in from leaders across the political landscape.
