Guwahati, May 2 (NationPress) Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi encountered significant protests from numerous individuals in Assam’s Nalbari district on Friday, due to claims regarding his alleged connections to Pakistan—a topic fervently highlighted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
While campaigning for the Panchayat polls, Gogoi was greeted with black flags by a group of demonstrators. They shouted slogans such as 'Gaurav Gogoi Go Back' and 'Pakistani agent Gaurav Gogoi', compelling the Congress leader to shorten one of his public engagements. Security personnel had to escort him as he exited the venue.
Despite the hostile reception, Gogoi was observed waving at the protesters as he departed from the meeting location.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently directed several inquiries at Gogoi on the X platform, avoiding direct mention of the Congress leader's name.
Sarma questioned, “Did you visit Pakistan for a continuous period of 15 days? If yes, could you please elaborate on the purpose of your visit?” Additionally, he asked, “Is it true that your wife receives a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while living and working in India? If that is the case, why is a Pakistani organization compensating activities conducted in India?” He also inquired about the citizenship status of Gogoi’s wife and their two children, asking, “Are they Indian citizens, or do they possess citizenship from another nation? More questions will follow,” Sarma concluded.
In a pointed remark aimed at Gogoi, the Chief Minister alleged that the Congress MP’s children are not Indian citizens. Sarma asserted, “I state this with full responsibility—one Member of Parliament from Assam has minor children who are no longer citizens of India. This is merely the beginning; much more will be unveiled.”
