Punjab: AAP Legislator Gurpreet Gogi Dies in Accidental Shooting at Ludhiana Residence (Updated)

Chandigarh, Jan 11 (NationPress) Gurpreet Gogi, a legislator associated with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, met an untimely demise under enigmatic circumstances due to a gunshot wound to the head after his licensed weapon accidentally discharged at his home in Ludhiana, as confirmed by a police official on Saturday.

At the age of 58, Gogi, who represented Ludhiana (West), was struck by a bullet at his residence located in the Ghumar Mandi area around midnight on Friday, shortly after returning from a public event, the police reported.

His spouse, who was in a separate room, heard the sound of the gunshot and hurried to his room, only to find him lying in a pool of blood, police disclosed.

Joint Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja informed the media that the bullet had penetrated Gogi's forehead. He added that the definitive cause of death would be established following the post-mortem results.

Immediately after the accidental discharge, the legislator was taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, as per police reports.

Police Commissioner Kuldeep Chahal and Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal also rushed to the DMCH following the incident.

Gogi, a former Congress member who joined the AAP in 2022, triumphed over two-time Congress legislator Bharat Bhushan Ashu in his initial Assembly election.

He is survived by his wife Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, a son, and a daughter, and he had various business interests including a private hostel, a gun shop, and a taxi service.

Gogi began his political journey as a councillor on a Congress ticket in 2002 and subsequently won four Municipal Corporation elections in Ludhiana.

Upon switching to the AAP, Gogi mentioned that he made the transition due to the lack of recognition for dedicated workers and hard work not yielding results in Congress.

He had a passion for driving his Porsche and notably filed his nomination for the Assembly election on an old scooter gifted to him by his mother.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his sorrow over Gogi's passing, stating, “I received the heartbreaking news of the loss of our esteemed MLA from Ludhiana West, Gurpreet Gogi-ji. It deeply saddens me; Gogi-ji was a genuinely good individual. My heartfelt condolences to his family during this trying time,” Mann shared in a post on X.

State AAP president Aman Arora also expressed condolences: “My deepest sympathies go out to the grieving family during this challenging period. I hope they can find the strength to cope with this immense loss. I pray that his noble spirit finds eternal peace,” he remarked.

The state Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring voiced his condolences as well, stating, “I am at a loss for words upon hearing this tragic news. My heartfelt sympathies are with the family and supporters. May Waheguru-ji grant eternal peace to the departed soul,” Warring posted on X.
