Islamabad, Oct 6 (NationPress) - Following a severe bout of heavy rains and fierce winds that have swept through various districts in Punjab, Pakistan, over the last 24 hours, a tragic report has emerged stating that four individuals lost their lives and 28 others sustained injuries due to the collapse of roofs and walls, as per the spokesperson from Rescue 1122, according to local media on Monday.
Rescue personnel reported that two children were among the deceased, with seven others injured as a result of a roof collapse in Tandlianwala, as reported by the prominent media outlet Samaa TV. In nearby villages within Nankana Sahib, one person was killed and four others injured in similar incidents. In Kasur, another fatality occurred, with five injuries reported, while three individuals were injured in Manawala, Sheikhupura.
Additionally, two people were injured in Lahore due to parts of buildings collapsing as a result of the ongoing storm. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) indicated that Punjab has experienced record levels of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The PDMA spokesperson also cautioned that rainfall is likely to persist across most districts over the next 24 hours, affecting areas such as Rawalpindi, Murree, Galyat, Attock, Lahore, Jhelum, Gujrat, Sialkot, and Gujranwala.
Authorities have placed all Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and rescue teams on high alert. Irfan Ali Kathia, Director General of PDMA, advised residents to remain indoors during severe weather conditions and to avoid low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding.
Kathia stated, "Residents are urged to take necessary precautions and stay in safe locations during adverse weather." Citizens have been directed to contact the PDMA helpline for any emergencies.
During a press briefing in Lahore on Saturday, Kathia had mentioned that rainfall was expected to begin in Punjab from Sunday and continue until Tuesday (October 7) in the northern parts, as reported by the daily Dawn.
Kathia noted that the north and northeastern regions, from Rawalpindi to Lahore, are anticipated to receive an average of 30 to 35 millimeters of rainfall, while the southern portions of the province could expect 5 to 10 mm of rain.
He cautioned that the intensity of the rainfall is expected to increase on October 6 and 7, with northern and northeastern Punjab likely experiencing 50 to 70 mm of rain, spreading to central districts as well.
