Chandigarh, Jan 11 (NationPress) In a pivotal initiative aimed at safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage and the livestock economy, the Punjab government is preparing to organize the “Ghora Mandi”, a spectacular traditional cattle and horse fair, in Muktsar Sahib to celebrate the Maghi festival.
This colorful event will highlight the state’s vibrant rural traditions, presenting exquisite breeds of horses and other livestock, as stated by the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, on Sunday.
A location spanning 70 acres at the Industrial Focal Point in Lambi Dhab, Muktsar Sahib, has been chosen for the fair, which is anticipated to attract breeders, traders, and animal lovers from nearby areas.
The ‘Ghora Mandi’ will transform the venue into a lively exhibition of equine beauty, celebrating the state’s rich cultural tapestry. Visitors can expect to see esteemed horse breeds such as Marwari and Nukra, along with rare cattle breeds and other livestock. The event will also highlight best practices in animal husbandry, honoring Punjab’s deep agricultural roots, he remarked.
Discussing the proactive steps taken by the department to ensure the fair’s success, Khudian emphasized the government’s dedication to the welfare and safety of livestock, which form the backbone of the rural economy.
“The Ghora Mandi is more than just a marketplace. It embodies our spirit. To guarantee the well-being of all animals present, we have established extensive arrangements,” he stated, mentioning that a specialized temporary veterinary dispensary has been set up on-site.
A dedicated team of 40 members, led by Deputy Director Animal Husbandry of Muktsar Sahib, Gurdit Singh, has been assigned to the venue.
This team will provide 24/7 medical support for livestock and maintain vigilant monitoring to curb the spread of any animal diseases. Highlighting the event’s popularity among animal enthusiasts, Khudian noted the enthusiastic turnout, with numerous livestock farmers already arriving with their animals.
“We anticipate thousands of animals at this renowned market, showcasing Punjab’s flourishing livestock industry,” he added.
The minister also urged livestock farmers to only bring healthy animals to the fair.
“The health of our livestock is crucial. If any farmer observes signs of illness in their animals, they should contact their local veterinary facility for advice before traveling,” he advised.
