Will Rajasthan's New Grain ATMs Transform Food Security for Beneficiaries?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Jan 21 (NationPress) Grain ATMs are set to be launched in Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Bikaner, enabling beneficiaries to receive their rations automatically using their ration cards. This innovation eliminates the necessity of visiting fair price shops, as stated by Rajasthan's Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara on Wednesday.
He further highlighted that Rajasthan's ‘Give Up’ campaign has become a pivotal initiative for enhancing food security, with over 54 lakh affluent individuals voluntarily renouncing their benefits. This action facilitates the inclusion of approximately 73 lakh eligible beneficiaries.
During a press conference at the Secretariat, the minister articulated that the campaign exemplifies the public's spirit of sacrifice and social responsibility, inspired by the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.
Godara mentioned that since the campaign's inception on November 1, 2024, more than 54.36 lakh affluent and ineligible individuals have voluntarily surrendered their food security benefits, thereby extending food security coverage to around 73 lakh eligible beneficiaries statewide.
He indicated that the campaign will conclude on February 28, after which actions will be implemented against ineligible beneficiaries who do not voluntarily withdraw.
Godara stated that the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that no eligible individual is excluded from food security has been instrumental in guiding this campaign. Following Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's directives, the state government relaunched the Food Security Portal on January 26 of the previous year, promoting large-scale integration of eligible beneficiaries.
He elaborated that Rajasthan has a cap of 4.46 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Previously, due to saturation, there was no opportunity to incorporate new beneficiaries. However, the voluntary relinquishment through the ‘Give Up’ campaign and the failure of nearly 27 lakh NFSA beneficiaries to complete e-KYC has opened up vacancies for about 81 lakh eligible individuals, which accounts for 18.6 percent of current NFSA beneficiaries.
Godara noted that the campaign received commendation from Union Home Minister Shah during the recent 32nd Northern Zonal Council meeting.
Jaipur district reported the highest number of new inclusions, with 3.17 lakh eligible beneficiaries added to the food security roster, followed by Barmer and Sikar with 3.07 lakh and 3.04 lakh beneficiaries, respectively.
The minister stated that the state currently hosts 4.35 crore beneficiaries, leaving approximately 11 lakh vacancies under the NFSA. Applications are continuously accepted, with only 90,000 applications pending, making Rajasthan uniquely available in this regard.
To ensure transparency, departmental officers carry out eight days of field surveys each month, supported by a three-tier verification system. District Collectors are empowered to approve eligible cases.
