Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed the Union government's commitment to introducing a 33% reservation for women in both Parliament and state Assemblies, despite a recent setback when the bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha.
Speaking at an election rally in Tamil Nadu, Singh criticized the DMK, Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Communist parties for blocking the passage of the women's reservation legislation.
"I assure you, on behalf of the government and based on the pledge made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that we are dedicated to implementing the women's quota at the earliest opportunity in Parliament," Singh declared in the Vasudevanallur Assembly constituency.
The Defence Minister is joining other prominent BJP campaigners to strengthen the party's message ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections on April 23.
Rajnath Singh is leading the NDA's campaign efforts in southern Tamil Nadu.
His packed schedule for the day included addresses in the Radhapuram constituency of Tirunelveli district, Puliyangudi in Tenkasi district, and a roadshow in Panagudi, situated approximately 400 meters from the main event.
The NDA's campaign has featured high-profile appearances from Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who have been rallying support for alliance candidates in recent days.
Earlier on Sunday, Home Minister Shah conducted a roadshow in the Erode South region.
"The people of Tamil Nadu are determined to eliminate the corruption-laden and dissatisfying politics of the DMK; they are set on establishing an NDA government in Tamil Nadu," he stated on the social media platform X.
He emphasized that the people of Tamil Nadu are resolved to dismantle the corrupt and appeasement-driven governance of the DMK and are eager to form an NDA government.
Shah asserted that the NDA would ensure the passage of the proposed Delimitation Bill in Parliament, accusing the DMK-Congress alliance of obstructing initiatives aimed at enhancing political representation in Tamil Nadu.
While addressing an election rally in Modakurichi, Shah revealed that the Centre has proposed increasing the number of Assembly constituencies in the state by 50% to better reflect population changes and improve representation.
However, he claimed that this initiative was stymied by the "narrow political thinking and vested interests" of the DMK and Congress. "We will not tolerate this conspiracy. The NDA government is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu, and I assure you that the Delimitation Bill will be passed," he assured.
