Bengaluru, Aug 18 (NationPress) Actress and former Congress MP Ramya has called on the police to apprehend all individuals involved in the brutal trolling she faced for voicing her support for Renuka Swamy’s family against actor Darshan in the notorious fan murder case.
Ramya has filed a police report against 43 social media accounts, as the individuals behind them have even issued rape threats.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Monday, Ramya remarked, "The vulgar messages have ceased. As public figures, we can overlook certain comments. Only seven suspects have been detained, and the others should also face justice."
She continued, "There is now a growing awareness about confronting trolls following my police complaint. Numerous women have reached out to me, expressing that they lacked the courage to file a complaint prior. After my report, people have begun to reconsider their actions. Previously, complaints were rare, and users would simply delete their profiles."
"Now, following police intervention, individuals will think twice before posting any comments. Consequently, the instances of trolling have decreased," she added.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) Cyber Crime Wing has detained seven individuals linked to the case involving vulgar messages and videos directed at Kannada actress Ramya by fans of actor Darshan.
Darshan is the second suspect in the fan murder case. Following the Supreme Court's revocation of his bail, he is currently held at the Bengaluru Central prison.
Darshan's fans targeted Ramya after she shared a post regarding the fan murder case, insisting that justice should prevail.
The police have initiated a search for additional suspects in this matter.
On July 28, Ramya submitted a complaint to Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, alleging that Darshan’s fans sent her obscene and defamatory messages in response to her comments on the fan murder case.
Ramya explained, “I shared news about the Supreme Court's ruling concerning actor Darshan's bail petition to inspire hope in the common people regarding justice. This is when the trolling commenced. I filed this complaint as a voice for women.”
“I have reported 43 social media accounts. Some even threatened me with rape. If this can happen to me, what about others? Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has assured me of action and has referred the case to the Cyber Crime Wing. Women deserve the same freedom as men. Actor Darshan should have advised his fans against posting such messages,” she added.
“As celebrities and public figures, we must abide by the law and set a precedent for others. Previously, superstars Yash and Kichcha Sudeep faced online harassment as well. I raised this issue before, too. Had action been taken sooner, we might not have reached this critical point,” she stated.
Ramya further highlighted that many offenders operated fake profiles under women's names and shared inappropriate images. While she has received support from the film industry, many women hesitate to speak out for fear of being vilified.
In her complaint, Ramya stated, "Disgruntled fans of actor Darshan have sent scandalous, gruesome, and repugnant messages to my Instagram through various accounts following my sharing of the Supreme Court’s proceedings. The messages I received are so offensive and misogynistic that I cannot even reproduce them in this complaint."
The organization Film Industry for Rights and Equality (FIRE) has submitted a letter to Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara, urging immediate action against the vulgar and misogynistic social media abuse targeting Ramya.
In response to the vulgar messages and videos from Darshan's fans directed at Ramya, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission has also called on Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh to take appropriate measures in this matter.
