Bengaluru, Aug 2 (NationPress) The Central Crime Branch (CCB) Cyber Crime Wing police have apprehended two individuals and detained another in relation to the disturbing case of obscene messages and videos disseminated by fans of actor Darshan against Kannada actress and former MP Ramya, as reported by police sources on Saturday.
Darshan is the second accused in a fan murder case, with the Supreme Court having reserved its judgment on an appeal contesting the bail granted to him.
The actor’s supporters targeted Ramya after she made a post regarding the case in the Supreme Court, stating that justice must prevail.
The authorities are actively searching for additional suspects involved in this case. The individuals arrested are from Ballary and Chitradurga regions in Karnataka. More information regarding the situation is expected to unfold. The accused had issued threats of rape against Ramya.
On July 28, Ramya submitted a formal complaint to Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, citing the obscene and defamatory messages received from Darshan’s fans after she commented on the fan murder case.
After lodging her complaint, Ramya stated, “I shared updates about the Supreme Court's proceedings regarding actor Darshan's bail petition to instill hope in the public for justice. Following this, I faced trolling. I am making this complaint as a stand for women.”
“I have reported 43 social media accounts. Some have even threatened me with rape. If this can happen to me, what about others? Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has promised action and transferred the case to the Cyber Crime Wing. Women deserve the same freedom as men. Actor Darshan should have discouraged his fans from posting such messages,” she added.
“As public figures, we must abide by the law and set a precedent for others. Previously, superstars Yash and Kichcha Sudeep faced similar online harassment. I highlighted this issue back then as well. Had action been taken earlier, this situation might not have escalated,” she noted.
Ramya also mentioned that many of the offenders used fake profiles with female names to post indecent images. She expressed gratitude for the support from the film industry but acknowledged that many women hesitate to speak out due to fears of character assassination.
In her complaint, Ramya asserted, "Discontented fans of actor Darshan have inundated my Instagram with scandalous, horrific, and repugnant messages as a result of my sharing news about the Supreme Court proceedings. The messages are so vile and misogynistic that I cannot even include them in my complaint."
In a related development, the Film Industry for Rights and Equality (FIRE) organization has sent a letter to Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara, demanding immediate action against the vulgar and misogynistic social media abuse directed at Ramya.
In response to the vulgar messages and videos targeting Ramya, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission has also urged Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh to take decisive action in this matter.
