Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, March 30 (NationPress) An effective rescue mission was conducted on Monday, facilitating the safe evacuation of 22 vehicles carrying both tourists and other passengers after heavy snowfall and a landslide obstructed the Bandipora-Gurez road in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to officials, the Bandipora District Administration, in close collaboration with the Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), efficiently managed the rescue of stranded tourists from Gurez Valley after the road's closure due to adverse weather conditions.
The blockade left 22 vehicles stranded at various points, particularly near Razdan Top, as sudden snowfall, mudslides, and rock falls rendered the road impassable.
The situation was worsened by fierce winds and tumultuous weather, creating significant challenges for the rescue teams. Upon receiving SOS calls from those affected, the District Administration acted without delay.
Deputy Commissioner of Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, closely supervised the evacuation efforts, issuing essential directives to ensure the safety of all stranded individuals.
The MED and BRO responded promptly, launching a courageous operation under extremely difficult circumstances. Their teams worked tirelessly to clear the accumulated snow and debris, successfully restoring travel access for stranded vehicles.
All tourists were evacuated safely, and immediate assistance, including medical care, was provided on-site.
Continuous rain in the plains and light to moderate snowfall in the mountainous regions disrupted normal life in the union territory on Monday. The meteorological office has indicated that the current weather pattern will persist until Tuesday evening, after which conditions are expected to improve.
District administrations in the Ganderbal, Anantnag, and Kupwara regions have issued avalanche warnings for vulnerable areas and advised residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary until the alert is lifted. Farmers and agriculturists have also been urged to halt agricultural activities until April 1.
