Seoul, April 14 (NationPress) - South Korean equities rose significantly on Tuesday, buoyed by renewed optimism surrounding US-Iran negotiations aimed at achieving peace. The market briefly surpassed the 6,000-point threshold for the first time since the onset of the U.S.-Iran tensions. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged by 189.03 points, equivalent to 3.25 percent, reaching 5,997.65 as of 11:20 a.m. local time.

At around 10:12 a.m., the index peaked at 6,000.18, maintaining its position close to this level, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.

This intraday surge above 6,000 marks the first instance since March 3, when the index recorded 6,180.45 following air strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28.

On that day, the KOSPI had plummeted by 7.28 percent, concluding at 5,791.91.

On Monday, the United States initiated a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after extensive discussions between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad, Pakistan, which unfortunately did not yield any progress.

Nevertheless, Washington has kept the diplomatic channels open, indicating its willingness to continue negotiations with Tehran for a potential agreement.

The resurgence of optimism for a deal positively influenced U.S. stock markets overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by 0.63 percent and the Nasdaq Composite increasing by 1.23 percent.

In Seoul, technology and shipbuilding sectors led the market's positive trajectory. Industry leader Samsung Electronics saw a rise of 3.73 percent, while semiconductor giant SK Hynix experienced a notable jump of 7.5 percent.

Major shipbuilders, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean, advanced by 1.73 percent and 2.83 percent, respectively.

The automotive sector also showed strength, with Hyundai Motor gaining 3.97 percent and its affiliate Kia climbing 2.04 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,483.05 won against the U.S. dollar at 11:20 a.m., reflecting an increase of 6.15 won from the previous trading session.
