Thiruvananthapuram, July 12 (NationPress) The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student organization affiliated with the ruling CPI(M), has vocally condemned an incident where students were reportedly instructed to wash their teachers' feet in schools allegedly associated with RSS-backed managements.
SFI leaders M. Sivaprasad and Sanjeev criticized this ritual as outdated and contrary to Kerala's progressive cultural values.
“These events took place in schools operated by the RSS, where students were pressured to engage in this practice. Such actions reflect the RSS's ideological stance and are utterly unacceptable within a contemporary, democratic educational framework,” the SFI expressed in their statement.
The organization has called for rigorous action, asserting that such rituals erode the inclusive and egalitarian principles that Kerala's education system is built upon.
Meanwhile, the school management involved refuted any claims of misconduct, labeling the controversy as “unnecessary.”
They asserted that the students willingly participated in the ritual, having gathered pooja materials on their own and conducted it in the teachers’ presence as part of a tradition.
In response to media coverage and the SFI's complaint, Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty acknowledged the situation and mandated an official investigation.
“Such customs are not suitable and contradict the values of a democratic and progressive education system,” Sivankutty remarked, directing district education authorities to compile a comprehensive report and ensure such activities do not recur. He also called for decisive action against any breaches of established regulations.
This event arises amidst escalating tensions between the CPI(M)-led state government and Kerala Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar. Their relationship has further deteriorated after the Governor adopted the image of Bharat Mata, a symbol often linked to the RSS, at official functions.
Last month, Minister Sivankutty left a meeting at the Raj Bhavan upon noticing this image prominently displayed on the dais, which was perceived as a significant breach of protocol.
