Bengaluru, Nov 21 (NationPress) In the midst of ongoing debates about Bengaluru's infamous traffic jams and crumbling road infrastructure, a video of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla joking about the city’s traffic during the Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS) has gained widespread attention, reigniting discussions about the chaotic traffic situation in the IT hub on Friday.
Shukla made his light-hearted comment at the Future Makers Conclave during BTS 2025 on Thursday. He remarked, “I traveled all the way from the other side of Bengaluru, from Marathahalli, spending twice as much time as I will spend on this presentation. Look at my commitment!”
The audience erupted in laughter at the mention of Marathahalli, known for its cramped roads and severe traffic congestion. Shukla joined in the amusement.
In response to the astronaut's comment, IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge later assured that such frustrating experiences would not happen again.
He quipped, “As Shubhanshu Shukla pointed out, it was easier for him to travel from space to Bengaluru, while navigating from Marathahalli to the venue (Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre) proved to be quite a challenge. We will make sure that doesn’t occur again.”
This incident is viewed as a setback for the Congress-led government, which is already facing a leadership crisis.
Opposition parties are poised to leverage Shukla's comment to criticize the government’s inadequate traffic management once more. It’s worth noting that several leaders from the IT sector have voiced their concerns about the government's inability to tackle Bengaluru's traffic woes effectively.
Group Captain Shukla is a distinguished officer and pilot in the Indian Air Force. He was one of four crew members aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on June 25, partaking in the Axiom-4 mission, and returned to Earth on July 15 after an impressive 18-day stint aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Recently, students from S.R.N. Mehta CBSE School in Kalaburagi, who clinched the first prize in the 8th-grade category of the National Space Society (NSS) Space Settlement Design Competition 2025—organized by NASA Ames Research Center—visited NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, where they met Shukla during the Future Makers Conclave. They were accompanied by the district's in-charge minister, Priyank Kharge.
Shukla also shared a captivating video illustrating how India appears from space. As the visuals transitioned northward, bright clusters of lights and the majestic Himalayas came into view. He described the breathtaking sights of Indian cities from orbit, showcasing stunning sunrise visuals as sunlight bathed the landscape, and noted how Bengaluru sparkles vividly when observed from space at night.
