Hyderabad, Dec 28 (NationPress) Six months after the tragic fire incident at Sigachi Industries Limited in Sangareddy district, Telangana, which resulted in the loss of 54 lives, law enforcement has apprehended the company's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Amit Raj Sinha.
The police presented Sinha to a magistrate, who subsequently placed him in judicial custody.
In a recent disclosure to BSE Limited and National Stock Exchange of India Limited, the company announced that Amit Raj Sinha was remanded on Saturday as part of the ongoing investigation concerning the fire incident.
"The company has implemented all necessary measures to maintain the continuity of its operations and day-to-day activities. In the meantime, Lija Stephen Chacko, Deputy Group CEO, will manage the company's operations," it stated.
On June 30, a significant fire erupted following a major explosion at the Sigachi Industries manufacturing facility located in the Pashamailaram industrial area of Sangareddy district, tragically claiming the lives of 54 workers and injuring 33 others.
While 46 bodies have been identified, eight individuals remain unaccounted for and are presumed dead.
The facility produces Microcrystalline Cellulose powder, a key binding agent used in tablets and capsules.
The BDL-Bhanur Police have initiated a case against the company's management, invoking Section 105 of the BNS for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a cognizable offense that carries a penalty of no less than five years and can extend to life imprisonment, along with fines.
Additionally, the FIR includes charges under Section 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and Section 117 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt).
Despite this, no arrests had been made prior to Sinha's arrest. The Telangana High Court recently expressed serious concerns regarding the delay in the investigation aimed at determining accountability for the explosion.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin summoned the Investigation Officer, directing him to produce all relevant documents related to the case, including the First Information Report, case diary, and progress reports of the investigation.
In a counter-affidavit filed by the state government in August, the court was informed that Sigachi had provided a written commitment to compensate each deceased worker's family with Rs 1 crore, although the timeline for these payments remains unclear.
