Seoul, Dec 23 (NationPress) South Korea has urged both Cambodia and Thailand to engage in negotiations to address the rising tensions along their border, expressing support for regional efforts aimed at alleviating the conflict.
"We commend the initiatives taken by ASEAN to mitigate tensions and pursue a peaceful settlement of the current situation," stated Park Il, spokesperson for South Korea's foreign ministry, in a recent statement.
"The South Korean administration calls on Cambodia and Thailand to resolve the situation through dialogue as soon as possible," he added, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Park further noted that Seoul is pleased about the recent special meeting of foreign ministers from the 11-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which includes both Cambodia and Thailand, aimed at addressing the ongoing situation.
Military clashes between Bangkok and Phnom Penh have persisted along their land border for three weeks, resulting in over 80 fatalities following the collapse of ceasefire discussions.
During a meeting of ASEAN’s senior diplomats on Monday, both nations agreed to initiate discussions between their defense officials to work toward reinstating the ceasefire.
The border conflict, which has historical roots stemming from the French colonial era, has seen both nations disputing territorial claims.
On Tuesday, a defense spokesperson from Cambodia reported that Thai military units continued to bombard Cambodian territory using artillery and machine guns mounted on tanks.
As of Tuesday morning, the civilian death toll in Cambodia has risen to 21, amid the ongoing conflict with Thailand, which has now entered its 17th day, as stated by Lt. General Maly Socheata, Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for the Cambodian Defense Ministry, according to Xinhua News Agency.
"The Thai military has targeted areas inhabited by Cambodian civilians, leading to 21 civilian deaths, including one infant, and injuring 83 others as of 6 PM on December 22," she elaborated during a press briefing.
Latest reports from the Cambodian Ministry of Interior indicate that the conflict has displaced approximately 545,000 Cambodians who have sought refuge in safer areas.
