Surat police on 8 June 2025 rescued a man from a locked seventh-floor apartment after he allegedly consumed a poisonous substance in what officials described as a suicide attempt. The rescue, carried out by personnel from the Laskana Police Station's Dial 112 team, required a constable to scale the building's exterior grille and enter through a window to reach the victim in time.

How the Rescue Unfolded

The sequence began when a woman called emergency services to report that her husband had allegedly ingested a poisonous substance and was unresponsive inside their flat. The Surat City Police control room immediately alerted the Laskana Police Station Dial 112 unit, along with Fire and Emergency Services and an ambulance, dispatching all units to the address.

The PCR van from Laskana was the first emergency unit on scene. Officers discovered that the seventh-floor flat was locked from the inside, blocking conventional entry. Police Constable Shailesh Chudasama and driver Kripalsinh Gohil moved to an adjacent flat and assessed the building's exterior for an alternative access point.

Constable's Daring Entry Through the Window

Constable Chudasama climbed across the building's exterior grille and, after repeated attempts to draw a response from inside, entered the flat through a window. What he found required immediate action.

'The door was locked from the inside by a man. We managed to force it open and saw that he had consumed a poisonous substance. I immediately restrained him and removed the remaining substance from his possession, but he had already ingested some of it and was vomiting. We quickly brought him downstairs and, without waiting for the ambulance, began taking him to a hospital in Kamrej. The ambulance met us en route, and he was immediately shifted for emergency medical treatment,' Chudasama said.

Victim's Condition and Background

The man, identified only as Kunal (name changed to protect identity), works in Surat's diamond-cutting and polishing industry. He survived the incident and is currently undergoing medical treatment, according to police. The circumstances that led to the alleged attempt have not been officially disclosed.

Official Recognition and Public Response

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi commended the personnel involved and publicly congratulated them for their swift response. A video of the rescue — capturing Chudasama's exterior climb and window entry — circulated widely online, drawing widespread praise from citizens for the officers' composure under pressure.

Police noted that the prompt intervention by the Dial 112 team was critical in ensuring the man received timely medical attention. This incident underscores the operational readiness of Surat's emergency response network, which has faced growing demand as urban density in the city rises alongside its industrial workforce.
