Key Takeaways
Surat, April 17 (NationPress) The trial runs for a crucial segment of the Surat Metro have commenced, paving the way for the anticipated launch of a mass rapid transit system. This development is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion and enhance accessibility to key commercial hubs, including the Surat Diamond Bourse.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited has kicked off testing on an 8.5-kilometer corridor that stretches from Dream City to Althan Tenement.
The trial phase, which will span over 500 hours, is focused on evaluating the train's speed, braking systems, and various other technical aspects in preparation for operational clearance.
According to officials, this service aims to provide a quicker, safer, and more eco-friendly transportation alternative for commuters.
The metro is designed to offer direct access to the Surat Diamond Bourse, benefitting approximately 40,000 to 45,000 artisans and traders who travel daily from localities such as Varachha, Katargam, and Sarthana.
Jayanti Savaliya, the Regional Chairman of the Gujarat Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council in Surat, remarked that the project is poised to tackle traffic issues.
“The traffic concerns will be significantly mitigated. With the metro connecting to the Diamond Bourse, around 45,000 individuals will have a convenient commuting option. The metro network throughout the city has been well-designed,” he stated.
Local residents echoed their optimism regarding the anticipated improvements in daily commutes. Raj Patel, a Surat resident, expressed, “With the introduction of the metro in Surat, those relying on public transport will experience enhanced convenience. Commuters will reach their destinations promptly. As a local, I am thrilled that after years of anticipation, we are finally getting a metro system—this is a delight for every Surat resident.”
Another resident, Roshan Chimna, noted, “The progress on this project has been remarkably swift in Surat. What could be more commendable than this?”
The Surat Metro Rail Project encompasses two corridors, covering a total of 40.35 kilometers and featuring 38 stations.
Corridor-1, referred to as the Diamond Corridor, connects Sarthana to Dream City over a length of 21.6 kilometers, which includes 15 kilometers of elevated track and 6.5 kilometers of underground track, comprising 14 elevated and 6 underground stations.
Corridor-2, also known as the Textile Corridor, links Bhesan to Saroli across a distance of 18.7 kilometers and is entirely elevated, featuring 18 stations. Two depots are being constructed at Dream City and Bhesan.
Anand Singh Bist, the Project Director of the Surat Metro Rail Project, commented, “Corridor-1, or the ‘Diamond Corridor’, links Dream City to Sarthana… Corridor-2, the ‘Textile Corridor’, connects Bhesan to Saroli.”
Officials confirmed that the construction of seven stations along the trial route is nearing completion. The metro service is anticipated to be made available to the public following the finalization of safety assessments and testing.
