Surat Railway Station Redevelopment: 50% Complete, Set to Finish by 2027
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Surat, March 25 (NationPress) The railway station in Gujarat's Surat is in the midst of a significant redevelopment, transforming it into a multi-modal transport hub (MMTH) with a comprehensive long-term capacity strategy. Approximately 50% of the initial phase of the ₹1,500 crore project has been accomplished, with a completion target set for December 2027.
This redevelopment, divided into two phases, is intended to merge rail, bus, and metro services in one location for a seamless travel experience.
The first phase, with an investment of around ₹980 crore, is currently progressing rapidly, including the construction of the east-side station building, while the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) structure has already been finalized.
According to Western Railway CPRO Vineet Abhishek, this project is designed with a vision that spans 50 years to accommodate the increasing passenger demand.
“Surat station is evolving into a multi-modal transport hub, integrating bus, metro, and railway services, ensuring that passengers have access to all amenities in one location, making travel completely seamless,” he stated.
He further noted that the plan encompasses a 5-km elevated ring road connecting all sides of the station, aimed at improving access and mitigating congestion.
“Passengers will have the option to approach the station via the elevated road, which will assist in avoiding traffic jams,” he added.
A central deck, measuring 145 metres by 85 metres, is under construction to accommodate ticketing, waiting areas, and commercial activities.
“Once passengers arrive at the deck, they can access ticketing, waiting areas, and commercial facilities, with a capacity to host over 2,000 people,” Abhishek remarked.
The project will also feature enhanced rail infrastructure.
In addition to the current four platforms, two new suburban platforms are set to be built—one towards Vadodara and another towards Mumbai—to support suburban services.
Two additional platforms for mail and express trains are also in the planning stages.
Abhishek explained that this redevelopment is crucial due to the constraints of the existing station, built in 1952, as the passenger traffic and infrastructure needs have grown significantly.
“The station is being redesigned to accommodate future growth and rising passenger numbers,” he stated.
He added that this initiative is part of a larger transformation of Indian Railways that has been underway for the past 13 to 14 years.
“From Vande Bharat trains to the Namo Bharat rapid trains and Amrit Bharat trains, along with the advancement of the Kavach safety system, station redevelopment, and the Amrit Bharat Station scheme, these are all facets of this transformation,” he noted.
Officials have indicated that several stations in the Western Railway region, including Surat and Ahmedabad, are undergoing extensive upgrades to boost capacity.
The expanded infrastructure is expected to facilitate the operation of more trains, enhance punctuality, and deliver a safer, more convenient travel experience for passengers.
