Tamil Nadu Sees 33.6% Increase in First-Time Voters Ahead of Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 8 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu is experiencing a notable surge in first-time voters as the state gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections. Recent data from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office indicates that the number of electors aged 18-19 has risen by approximately 33.6 percent. This increase signifies a jump from 10.9 lakh voters during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to 14.6 lakh currently, showcasing a marked transformation in the state’s electoral landscape.
The total electorate has also seen a slight increase. Following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which resulted in a decline to 5.67 crore, the number of voters has now grown by 6.36 lakh to 5.73 crore as of April 6, the deadline for filing nominations.
This rise is attributed to new applicants who completed Form 6 after the release of the final SIR rolls on February 13. These newly registered voters are now eligible to participate in the Assembly elections.
The increase in first-time voters is particularly noteworthy as their share of the total electorate has also grown. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, voters aged 18-19 comprised just 1.8 percent of the electorate, which was at 6.23 crore.
Despite the overall electorate decreasing to 5.73 crore post-SIR, the proportion of first-time voters has now climbed to 2.5 percent. Election officials have pointed out that this growth was anticipated, as the SIR process involved deletions across various age groups, ultimately elevating the relative share of younger voters. Nevertheless, the substantial increase in absolute numbers demonstrates a robust engagement from young voters in recent weeks.
Among the 6.36 lakh new voters added since February 13, nearly one-third are first-time voters, raising their total from 12.59 lakh to 14.6 lakh.
The SIR process itself introduced significant changes to the electoral rolls. Prior to the revision beginning in October 2025, Tamil Nadu had 6.41 crore voters. This count dramatically fell to 5.44 crore during the enumeration in December, due to the removal of 97.34 lakh names, before it rebounded to 5.67 crore following the processing of claims and objections.
As of April 6, the state boasts 5,73,43,291 registered voters, including 2,93,04,905 women and 2,80,30,658 men. Women continue to surpass men by 12.74 lakh, maintaining a consistent trend. There are also 7,728 transgender voters, while Dharmapuri is the only district where male voters marginally outnumber female voters.
With a rising youth electorate, political parties are likely to ramp up efforts to engage first-time voters, whose turnout could be crucial in determining the outcome of a tightly contested, multi-cornered electoral battle.
