Chennai, April 9 (NationPress) The candidate selection process for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is nearing its conclusion, with the final date for nomination withdrawals set for Thursday.
Voting for the Assembly elections is scheduled for April 23. The nomination filing commenced on March 30 and ended on April 6, spanning four working days due to holidays in between.
A notable increase in nominations has been observed as the deadline approached, indicating a surge in political engagement throughout the state.
According to data from the Election Commission, 573 nominations were submitted on the first day (March 30). This number escalated to 1,361 on the second day, then surged to 3,430 on the third day. The final day of filing saw an impressive 7,599 nomination papers submitted across various constituencies.
All submitted nomination papers were scrutinized on April 7 by the Returning Officers in their respective areas.
After thorough verification, it was confirmed that 5,081 nominations were valid, whereas 2,480 were rejected for multiple reasons. Additionally, 38 candidates chose to withdraw their nominations following the scrutiny.
Thursday stands as the last chance for any candidate to withdraw their nominations. The withdrawal period is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., allowing candidates or their designated representatives to submit withdrawal requests to the Returning Officers. Once this process concludes, the Election Commission will finalize and distribute the list of candidates contesting in the elections later that day. This list is pivotal for the next stages of election preparations.
Officials have indicated that based on the finalized candidate list, ballot papers containing the names, symbols, and photographs of the candidates will be printed for use in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Arrangements are being made to ensure this process is completed on time.
