Shashi Tharoor Aims to Dismantle CPI-M-Led LDF Government in Kerala
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated on Monday that the forthcoming Assembly elections in Kerala represent a crucial hurdle for the party, as it seeks to displace the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
While addressing journalists outside Parliament, Tharoor remarked that the re-election of the LDF government in the last election was atypical.
"Kerala's election holds great significance for us. The CPI-M-led LDF returned to power previously, which is unusual since for nearly fifty years, the two major political fronts have alternated governance. We do not wish for this to happen again; we aim to change the government this time," he emphasized.
Tharoor also highlighted that the announcement of early election dates has left political parties with a narrow timeframe for preparations.
"The early election timeframe has taken us all by surprise. We were anticipating the elections in the last ten days of April, but now polling will occur on April 9. This leaves us with only a few weeks to act," he explained.
The tight schedule poses challenges, particularly for new candidates. "We have numerous newcomers who require time to connect with the electorate. This adds an extra layer of difficulty for all of us. Nevertheless, we are diligently working and are fully equipped," he remarked.
Tharoor also hinted that the party will soon reveal its candidates. "In the coming days, you will witness some candidate announcements. The nomination period remains open until Monday, and we will certainly comply with that deadline," he stated.
He further indicated that the election campaign will impact his presence in Parliament. "I have maintained a 100% attendance record throughout my parliamentary journey, but it appears this election may hinder that, as I might not be available in Parliament over the next two weeks," he added.
Kerala began its first full day of vigorous campaigning, with political parties launching a 25-day high-energy campaign ahead of the April 9 elections for the 140-member Kerala Assembly.
While opposition alliances are yet to finalize their candidates, the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has acted swiftly, with its key members—the CPI-M and the Communist Party of India—announcing their candidates and activating their campaign strategies.
Across the state, ministers and candidates were seen engaging with voters early in the morning to garner support.
