Shashi Tharoor Labels NDA a Zero-Seat Party in Kerala Amid Strong Voter Engagement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor stated on Thursday that the BJP-led NDA lacks any substantial credibility in Kerala, labeling it as a "zero-seat party." This declaration came as voting commenced statewide with a commendable turnout.
“I firmly believe, and I have consistently made this point clear, that the NDA is indeed a zero-seat party in Kerala. They possess no credibility regarding government formation issues. There are only two constituencies out of 140 where they are seen as even marginally competitive,” Tharoor conveyed to IANS after casting his vote.
Tharoor expressed his contentment with the early voter turnout, deeming it a positive indicator for democracy. “I’ve arrived at my usual polling station today, and I’m delighted to witness a remarkable turnout. It appears that this election has motivated the voters of Kerala to participate in large numbers, which is an encouraging sign. This suggests that the populace of Kerala is not leaving decisions solely to political activists and cadres…” he remarked.
He also highlighted the electoral prospects of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), stating, “In the previous election in 2011, we were granted a very narrow majority to govern. This time, I am optimistic for a more substantial number, providing a stronger foundation for our government to enact meaningful change.”
Tharoor further dismissed the NDA's standing in the state, asserting, “During my travels throughout the state, I have hardly noticed any signs of a credible NDA presence. In only a couple of constituencies out of 140 do people suggest they might have a viable chance. However, these races are all three-way contests involving UDF, LDF, and NDA. Thus, I would not presume that the NDA has any guaranteed victory prospects anywhere.”
Polling is currently taking place across all 140 constituencies in Kerala, with significant voter engagement, marking one of the most closely observed elections in recent years.
Meanwhile, Tharoor also addressed the Women’s Reservation Bill, reiterating the Congress party’s position: “We were the initiators of this Bill. It was actually Sonia Gandhi who introduced the first Women’s Reservation Bill during the UPA administration. We advocate for women’s reservation — the key question is the mechanism and the changes they wish to propose. We have heard media speculation, but the actual Bill is yet to be seen.”
