Shashi Tharoor Confident UDF Will Triumph in Kerala Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, April 7 (NationPress) In a show of unwavering confidence as the Kerala Assembly elections approach, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor declared on Tuesday that the United Democratic Front (UDF) is poised for a "decisive victory," pointing to significant anti-incumbency sentiments against the current Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and an increasing public demand for change.
Tharoor dismissed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a mere "zero-seat party" within the Kerala Assembly at present. He remarked, "If they manage to secure one, two, or even three seats, it would be nothing short of miraculous. They are not a contender in government formation."
He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his numerous rallies in Kerala, arguing that the BJP's national appeal fails to resonate at the state level. "People understand he will not be the Chief Minister here. Thus, any minor gains the BJP might achieve in parliamentary elections hold no relevance for who will lead Kerala," he commented.
Tharoor further appealed to voters not to "squander" their anti-incumbency votes on the BJP. "For those seeking change, the wise choice is to vote for the UDF to ensure we form a robust and effective government with a clear majority," he stated.
On governance matters, Tharoor challenged the LDF government's assertions of progress, particularly regarding housing and infrastructure. He noted that previous UDF administrations, including that of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, had delivered equally or superior outcomes. He highlighted that significant projects like the Vizhinjam port were launched during UDF governance, despite initial resistance from the Left.
Discussing disaster management issues, including those in Wayanad, Tharoor emphasized that accountability rests with the ruling government. "In the event of disasters, the state government bears responsibility. They have access to numerous relief funds and mechanisms. The critical question is—what actions have they taken?" he remarked, acknowledging that opposition parties like the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League had voluntarily participated in relief efforts.
Addressing ongoing conflicts in West Asia, Tharoor stressed that India should adopt a proactive stance in promoting peace. "The conflict impacts not only the region but also countries like India reliant on energy supplies. India must advocate strongly for peace," he stated, welcoming any diplomatic efforts by the Prime Minister with regional leaders.
When questioned about the chance of becoming Chief Minister, Tharoor regarded the notion as speculative. "The Congress follows a transparent process. Post-elections, elected MLAs and party leadership make the decision. I am not a candidate but will always be ready to support whoever assumes the role," he affirmed.
The Kerala Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, with results to be announced on May 4.
