Key Takeaways
Chennai, Dec 23 (NationPress) Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on Tuesday that Tamil Nadu continues to see consistent growth in its agricultural sector, thanks to enduring policy measures put in place by the DMK government. He also criticized the BJP-led Union government for what he labeled “anti-farmer” policies.
In a statement made on National Farmers’ Day, celebrated on December 23, Stalin conveyed his best wishes to farmers, acknowledging them as the foundation of society and a significant force in combating hunger globally.
He emphasized that the Dravidian model of governance has prioritized agriculture in developmental strategies, leading to noticeable enhancements in farm productivity and rural well-being.
Highlighting key initiatives, the Chief Minister noted that Tamil Nadu is one of the few states to present a dedicated agriculture budget, alongside organizing agricultural business festivals and exhibitions to connect farmers with markets.
He mentioned the introduction of the ‘Uzhavan’ mobile application, which provides farmers with timely information, and the Kalaignar All-Village Integrated Agricultural Development Programme, aimed at bolstering rural infrastructure.
Moreover, he pointed out that free electricity connections for farmers serve as a crucial support mechanism.
“These persistent efforts of the Dravidian model government have allowed Tamil Nadu to maintain progress in agricultural production,” Stalin stated, reaffirming the government's dedication to enhancing farmers’ incomes and living standards.
Simultaneously, he accused the BJP-led Union government of disregarding farmer welfare. He referred to the alleged weakening of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, asserting that such actions adversely impact agricultural workers and rural families.
The Chief Minister announced that protests would take place on Tuesday against the central government's decisions perceived as detrimental to farmers.
In the meantime, AIADMK general secretary and opposition leader, Edappadi K Palaniswami, also released a statement in honor of National Farmers’ Day.
He extended his greetings to farmers, recognizing them as the “providers of the world,” whose relentless work, deeply intertwined with soil and nature, is the bedrock of the nation’s economy and the lives of its people.
Palaniswami stressed that safeguarding farmers’ welfare, safety, and future is vital for the country’s advancement.
He urged all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to enhancing farmers’ lives and fortifying agriculture, which he highlighted as essential to national development.
The remarks from the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK underscore the ongoing political and policy focus on farmer welfare in Tamil Nadu, particularly as the state approaches the 2026 Assembly elections.
