Is TN's Growth Truly Driven by Centre's Funding and Welfare Programs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 8 (NationPress) The spokesperson for the Tamil Nadu BJP, A.N.S. Prasad, made a robust defense of the Union government's record on development in the state, claiming that Tamil Nadu's economic growth has been significantly supported by increased central funding and key welfare initiatives introduced during the NDA administrations of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In response to the DMK-led alliance's planned protests on February 12 against the Union Budget, modifications to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), and the India–US trade agreement, Prasad dismissed claims of discrimination as politically motivated and misleading.
He emphasized that the Modi administration has extended the employment guarantee scheme from 100 to 125 days and increased wages; however, he pointed out that the execution of these programs lies with state governments.
Prasad also noted that certain funding conditions were implemented to rectify irregularities reported in various states, including Tamil Nadu.
He highlighted that Tamil Nadu has experienced a notable increase in fund devolution during the NDA period compared to the Congress-led UPA years from 2004 to 2014.
Furthermore, he argued that numerous significant infrastructure and industrial projects that have shaped the state's economy were initiated under BJP-led governments.
As examples, he mentioned the Golden Quadrilateral highway project that enhanced road connectivity, the creation of TIDEL Park in Chennai, which catalyzed the state's IT growth, and the expansion of automobile and electronics manufacturing hubs around the capital.
He also pointed to welfare programs such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, stating that these initiatives have bolstered rural infrastructure and improved living conditions.
According to official statistics, rural tap water access in Tamil Nadu surged following 2019, with numerous households gaining new connections.
Regarding the India–US trade deal, Prasad asserted that the agreement would open avenues for small and medium enterprises and increase exports from Tamil Nadu's industrial sectors, accusing the DMK of opposing it for political gain.
As political discourse heats up ahead of the Assembly elections, Prasad called upon the DMK to provide comparative funding statistics from prior governments, reiterating that central support has been crucial in Tamil Nadu's development.
