Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In a heartbreaking incident in Jaipur on January 20, a mother, her son, and daughter-in-law tragically lost their lives when their speeding vehicle collided with a stationary container truck. The impact was so intense that the front of the car was utterly devastated, resulting in the immediate death of three occupants.
The accident transpired around 11 AM on a Tuesday on National Highway-48 near the Chandwaji police station along the Jaipur-Delhi route.
Seven additional passengers, including women and young children, suffered serious injuries and were swiftly transported to NIMS Hospital for medical care.
This tragic event caused a temporary halt to traffic on the busy highway. Eyewitnesses reported that the car was traveling at a considerable speed when it suddenly veered off course and struck the parked container truck.
Several individuals were trapped within the wreckage and required assistance from local bystanders and law enforcement to escape.
According to Chandwaji SHO Hiralal Saini, the accident took place at Bilpur, roughly one kilometer before the Chandwaji flyover.
The vehicle was en route from Jaipur to Delhi, carrying a group that included men, women, and children. Medical professionals at NIMS Hospital confirmed the deaths of Pooja Singh, wife of Vivek Kumar; Basanti, spouse of Harishankar; and Vivek Kumar, son of Harishankar, upon their arrival.
All three victims were residents of Dibulgaj in Varanasi. The force of the collision was so severe that the car's engine was dislodged, and the front was nearly split apart.
The injured individuals have been identified as Vikas (34), son of Harishankar; Aditi (34), wife of Vikas Kumar; Nikki (28), spouse of Avadh Bihari; Sibu (2), son of Vivek Kumar; and Kuku (18 months), daughter of Vikas Kumar.
These individuals also hail from Dibulgaj, Varanasi. Two others injured in the incident, Anshu (19), daughter of Prem Kumar, and Deepraj (23), son of Prem Kumar, are from Phoola, Raebareli. Police revealed that the family was returning from a pilgrimage to Khatushyamji.
Initial investigations indicate that the crash may have been caused by overspeeding and the driver potentially falling asleep at the wheel.
The wrecked car and container truck have been seized for thorough investigation.
A lengthy traffic jam ensued on NH-48, with vehicles blocked on both sides for nearly half an hour before traffic resumed gradually.
Road accidents on national highways are becoming increasingly prevalent across the nation.
In July 2025, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari reported to the Rajya Sabha that over 27,000 individuals lost their lives in highway accidents during the first half of 2025, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety.
