Washington, Sep 11 (NationPress) Sergio Gor, who heads the US Presidential Personnel Office and is a prominent candidate for the Ambassador to India position, stated on Thursday that President Donald Trump maintains a strong friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
When responding to a question from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding how US-India relations can aid in resolving the Ukraine crisis, Gor remarked, "Our President has a strong friendship with Prime Minister Modi, and that is something distinctive."
He noted that even when Trump has voiced concerns about trade with India, he has always commended PM Modi's leadership.
"They have an extraordinary bond. I’ve been in the same room with them," Gor said, highlighting that discussions on tariffs are already underway.
He also pointed out that limiting India's purchase of Russian oil remains a significant goal for the administration.
Gor’s comments come as the strategic relationship between Washington and New Delhi grows, with energy and trade becoming focal points.
Gor informed the Senate that Washington and New Delhi are “not that far apart right now” regarding a trade agreement, indicating that discussions have reached the “nitty-gritty” phase.
He emphasized that India is a “strategic partner” for the United States and committed to enhancing ties in security, trade, and shared values if confirmed.
“India is not just a regional ally but a strategic partner,” he stated, detailing priorities that include rebuilding trust, tackling trade issues, and increasing cooperation in climate, defense, and technology.
“India represents one of the top relationships America has today for the world’s future,” remarked Secretary of State Marco Rubio during Gor’s nomination hearing.
Currently, Gor serves as the director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office. His nomination as ambassador to India was made public on August 22, alongside an additional role as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.
A close associate of Donald Trump with robust conservative credentials, his appointment is under close scrutiny in both Washington and New Delhi.
