Washington, Feb 7 (NationPress) President Donald Trump has enacted an executive order that extends the national emergency concerning Iran, simultaneously establishing a fresh tariff framework aimed at nations engaging in trade with Tehran.

The White House indicated that this directive aims to safeguard US national security, foreign policy interests, and the economy. This enables the United States to impose extra tariffs on imports from any nation that “directly or indirectly engages in purchasing, importing, or acquiring any goods or services from Iran.”

According to the White House, this action is a part of a larger strategy to address Iran's international conduct, highlighting Tehran's ambitions for nuclear capability, its ballistic missile endeavors, support of terrorism, and destabilizing actions within the Middle East.

The fact sheet from the White House labeled Iran as the foremost global state sponsor of terrorism. It noted Tehran's backing of proxy groups and militias throughout the region that have harmed American lives and continue to pose threats to US personnel, allies, and partners.

Furthermore, the administration pointed to Iran's domestic situation, asserting that the regime has squandered national resources on nuclear and missile projects while the populace and infrastructure suffer.

The White House has accused Iran of severe domestic oppression, stating that the regime has resorted to killing protesters, violating fundamental human rights, and employing violence to stay in power. It also claimed Tehran is spreading extremism and obstructing peace and stability efforts in the region.

The administration views these actions as an ongoing and significant threat to the United States, necessitating a persistent and escalated response to safeguard both Americans and US interests.

This executive order reaffirms President Trump's long-held belief that Iran cannot be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon. The White House emphasized that he has consistently made this commitment during his initial term and campaign.

The fact sheet indicates that the President is building on prior actions taken during his previous administration, which included the withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Agreement, reinstating what the administration refers to as maximum pressure, and designating Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

After resuming office, Trump again reinstated maximum pressure on Iran, with the objective of denying Tehran any route towards a nuclear weapon and countering its influence beyond its borders.

The administration also referenced military actions taken last year; it mentioned that in June, following Iran's failure to reach an agreement with Washington, President Trump authorized an operation that targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, considerably hindering its nuclear aspirations.

The fact sheet disclosed that the President has recently stationed a considerable US military presence in the region, urging Iran to engage in fair negotiations that would exclude nuclear weapons or face sterner repercussions.

Lastly, the White House positioned the Iran order within a broader strategy towards nations viewed as hostile, citing recent actions against Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and the imposition of new tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba.

The administration stated that these measures aim to convey a clear message: dictators and state sponsors of terrorism will be held accountable. The executive order is set to take effect early Friday.
