Tehran, Jan 15 (NationPress) The UK has made the decision to temporarily shut down its embassy in Tehran and has withdrawn all diplomatic personnel, citing an escalating security situation. This move comes in the wake of Iran’s brutal crackdown on protests and growing concerns over potential US military intervention.
On Wednesday (local time), the UK Foreign Office confirmed, “We have temporarily closed the British Embassy in Tehran. It will now operate remotely.”
They further explained that British staff had been evacuated due to the current security circumstances.
This decision coincides with a period of increased instability in the region, with reports suggesting that US President Donald Trump is contemplating possible military action against Iran.
The UK's announcement followed the United States’ decision to evacuate some personnel from the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which is the largest US military facility in the Middle East.
Recently, diplomatic ties between Iran and European nations have deteriorated, with Britain’s envoy being summoned alongside several other European diplomats for a tense meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
In reaction to this, UK’s Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer called in Iran’s ambassador to London.
Despite the growing tensions, Araghchi adopted a conciliatory stance in an interview with Fox News, stating that Iran is “ready for negotiation” and has adhered to this position for the past two decades.
“Diplomacy is far superior to war,” he asserted, urging Washington to seek a negotiated resolution instead of resorting to military options.
Simultaneously, the Iranian foreign minister accused what he termed as terrorist groups for the domestic unrest, alleging it was part of an “Israeli plot” intended to entangle Trump in conflict.
The situation in Iran remains precarious.
