Why Are US Lawmakers Calling for Ambassador Sergio Gor’s Testimony on India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Feb 12 (NationPress) Lawmakers urged the State Department to ensure the US ambassador to India is available for congressional testimony, highlighting the strategic significance of the bilateral relationship and advocating for increased oversight.
During a House subcommittee hearing on South and Central Asia held on Wednesday (local time), Democratic Ranking Member Sydney Kamlager-Dove inquired of Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur if he would collaborate with lawmakers to bring Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, before the committee.
“You oversee the ambassadors,” Kamlager-Dove noted, stating, “It would be crucial for him, in light of his roles, to present before the committee and address questions, as we've all acknowledged, this region is incredibly strategic and vital.”
Kapur defended the ambassador's efforts.
“Mr. Gor is, in my view, a highly effective ambassador,” he remarked.
He continued that Gor “has achieved several commendable outcomes, even though he has only been in the position for a brief period.”
Kapur also underscored Gor's connection with the White House.
“He is a trusted confidant of the President and enjoys his trust and confidence, and we have a productive working relationship,” he stated.
However, Kapur did not commit to having Gor appear publicly before the panel.
“I will consider -- discuss this possibility,” he mentioned.
Kamlager-Dove pressed on, directly asking Kapur whether he would “collaborate with us to facilitate his presence here.”
“Well, we discuss numerous issues, and we will consider this possibility,” Kapur reiterated.
During the hearing, Kapur described India as anchoring “the western half of the Indo-Pacific,” while lawmakers emphasized the significance of the new US-India trade framework and the expansion of defense ties.
The request for Gor's testimony arises amid increased scrutiny regarding ambassadorial accountability and coordination between the State Department and Congress.
Lawmakers indicated that, given India's pivotal role in the US strategy—ranging from counterbalancing China to ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean—direct engagement with the ambassador would clarify diplomatic priorities and their implementation.
Kapur reiterated that he and the ambassador maintain regular communication and that Gor holds the President’s trust and confidence.
The hearing concluded without a specific timeline, but it highlighted Congress's determination to remain actively involved in shaping and overseeing US engagement in South Asia’s most consequential bilateral relationship.
The US-India relationship has grown tremendously over the past two decades across defense, trade, and technology sectors. As Washington positions New Delhi as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific, congressional oversight of diplomatic leadership and policy execution has gained heightened importance.
