Why Did a US Warship Dock at Cambodia's Naval Base?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 25 (NationPress) The arrival of the USS Cincinnati, an American naval vessel, at Cambodia's Ream Naval Base this past weekend has stirred significant discussions and concerns across the region.
This event is noteworthy as it marks the inaugural docking of a US Navy warship at this Cambodian facility following its renovation by Chinese state enterprises last year.
Additionally, the visit of the US warship aligns with an upcoming high-profile meeting between Adm. Samuel Paparo, head of the US Indo-Pacific Command, and Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha.
Concerns have emerged regarding possible exclusive access to the base being granted to China, Cambodia’s close ally and primary source of aid and investment. However, the Cambodian government has denied any such agreement.
The controversy traces back to 2019, when reports suggested an agreement between China and Cambodia allowing Chinese military access for 30 years. While Beijing has dismissed these claims, the Cambodian government has consistently refuted any exclusive privileges for China.
Notably, the USS Cincinnati is an Independence-class littoral combat ship capable of operating in shallower waters.
The ship's crew, approximately 100 strong, is set to participate in sports and other activities in the nearby city of Sihanoukville during their stay from January 24-28, according to a report by Wral news.
As per the deputy commander of the base, “Our government has put considerable effort into developing this port so that all foreign vessels wishing to dock in Cambodia can do so.”
“We have achieved this goal, and we welcome all, whether American, Australian, Japanese, or any other ships wishing to dock in Cambodia,” he further stated.
Additionally, a statement from the Cambodian Navy revealed that over 37 US warships have visited Cambodian facilities from 2003 to 2026.
