Is VCK Supporting Congress's Demand for Government Shares if DMK Alliance Wins?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 18 (NationPress) VCK leader and MP from Chidambaram Lok Sabha, V. Thirumavalavan, has come forward to support the Congress party’s call for a stake in the government if the DMK-led alliance emerges victorious in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He remarked that such a plea is not only common but also reasonable within the context of coalition politics.
In a press conference held in Tiruchi, Thirumavalavan addressed inquiries about the Congress's demand for ministerial roles, should the DMK regain power.
He stated that discussions and negotiations are integral to alliance politics, particularly during election periods. “In the course of elections, these discussions are standard across all alliances. The Congress has requested a share in the government, and the feasibility of this will be determined through dialogue,” he explained.
Thirumavalavan asserted that such demands should not threaten the stability of the alliance.
He noted that Congress, as a long-term ally, is entitled to voice such a request. “For years, we have collectively strived for the success of the DMK. What is the issue if Congress seeks a portion of power now?” he questioned.
Earlier, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin remarked that power-sharing in Tamil Nadu is not practical under the current political structure.
Addressing this, Thirumavalavan maintained that the final outcome would rely on negotiations, reinforcing that the Congress party will remain an integral part of the DMK coalition.
“We contributed to the formation of this alliance, and we also have a stake in its preservation. There is no need to apply undue pressure concerning the demand for power-sharing,” he added.
Additionally, Thirumavalavan endorsed senior Congress figure Mani Shankar Aiyar’s proposal to appoint Chief Minister M.K. Stalin as the coordinator of the INDIA bloc at the national level.
As Assembly elections draw near, the discussions among alliance partners are becoming more pronounced. Nonetheless, Thirumavalavan’s comments reflect an effort to uphold solidarity within the DMK-led coalition, even as power-sharing talks continue in the background.
