KC Venugopal Urges CM Vijayan for Clarity on Sabarimala Women's Entry
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, March 17 (NationPress) The issue surrounding women's entry into Sabarimala has resurfaced prominently, with K.C. Venugopal, the Congress general secretary and MP, launching a pointed critique of the state administration and urging Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to clarify his stance.
During his address at the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha's state conference in Kochi, Venugopal condemned the state government for what he described as “evasive maneuvers” in the Supreme Court regarding this sensitive matter.
He claimed that despite numerous chances, the government had not articulated a definitive position on whether it supports or opposes women of all ages entering the temple.
The Congress leader expressed confusion over why the Chief Minister, who previously apologized when a celebrity was upset, has not offered an apology for allegedly offending religious sentiments and traditions.
Venugopal also questioned the absence of action regarding cases filed against devotees during the Sabarimala protests and the lack of compensation for those affected.
Citing earlier affidavits, he pointed out that the 2016 administration essentially maintained the position taken by the 2007 government led by V.S. Achuthanandan without reassessment.
He further asserted that the current approach of consulting religious scholars and deferring to the Supreme Court signifies an attempt to dodge accountability.
Venugopal criticized the notion that state legislation could resolve the issue, noting that the government has yet to convey a firm stance in court.
Reaffirming the Congress party’s position, Venugopal stated that it does not endorse women's entry that undermines temple customs and traditions, emphasizing that such matters should not be conflated with broader gender equality issues.
He challenged the Chief Minister to provide a clear answer—either “yes” or “no”—on the matter, insisting that the public deserves a straightforward response. He warned that those who disregard traditions and offend devotees’ feelings will be held accountable by the electorate.
Venugopal’s challenge to CM Vijayan is poised to be a focal point in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The polls are set for April 9, with results to be declared on May 4.
