Chennai, Sep 23 (NationPress) The president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), K. Selvaperunthagai, made a strong appeal on Tuesday to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government to allow actor-turned-politician Vijay to conduct his political campaign without any restrictions. He emphasized that Vijay should have the freedom to campaign throughout the state.
During a press conference in Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram district, after participating in a signature campaign opposing the Election Commission of India, Selvaperunthagai asserted that placing prohibitory orders or obstructing Vijay's meetings is an act against democratic principles.
"This is a democratic nation. Anyone is entitled to establish a political party and campaign wherever they choose. The government should not obstruct his efforts. Let the populace hear his message and respond as they see fit," he noted.
The TNCC leader also pointed out that Vijay has not made any disparaging remarks towards the Congress party in his addresses. "The Congress is not in power at the Centre or in Tamil Nadu. There’s nothing for him to criticize us about, which is why he hasn’t spoken against us," he clarified.
Commenting on the recent reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates by the Centre, Selvaperunthagai labeled it a misleading tactic.
He maintained that this reduction has not aided the average citizen, as household savings continue to decline. "Global economists are warning of challenging times ahead for the Indian economy. The decision to lower GST rates comes in this context, and claiming it benefits the people is deceptive," he added.
Regarding political alliances, the Congress leader mocked the partnership between AIADMK and BJP, characterizing it as an "unnatural alliance" that the electorate has rejected.
"No matter how often they proclaim unity, the people have already dismissed this coalition. It lacks credibility and public backing," he stated.
Selvaperunthagai's comments are particularly relevant as Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) heightens its outreach efforts across the state.
The TNCC’s call for unrestricted campaigning is also viewed as an effort to reinforce Congress’s position on political freedoms, while simultaneously distancing itself from the DMK government's limitations and the AIADMK-BJP coalition.
