What’s the Status of Voter Document Verification in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) With the conclusion of the scrutiny phase for the voters' documents submitted during the hearing on claims and objections to the draft voters' list in West Bengal, there remains uncertainty surrounding the count of voter documents identified as "logical discrepancy" cases that need verification by judicial officers, as directed by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court.
The deadline for this scrutiny ended at midnight on Saturday.
During a meeting led by the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Sujoy Paul, it was resolved to assign 250 judicial officers to manage the adjudication of claims and objections from the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, which is preparing for elections. The meeting included notable attendees such as West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Chief Secretary Nandini Goswami, Acting Director General of Police Peeyush Pandey, State Advocate General Kishore Datta, and an Additional Solicitor General representing the Union government.
However, an insider from the CEO’s office noted that since the regular scrutiny was still ongoing when the meeting wrapped up late Saturday, the precise number of voters’ documents to be referred for adjudication could not be determined.
It has been estimated that the number of documents requiring judicial review will be about 45 lakh to 50 lakh.
Justice Paul expressed concerns during the meeting regarding the feasibility of processing such a vast number of documents within a limited timeframe. He is expected to hold a virtual meeting with the top officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) later today for further clarifications.
Currently, the final voters’ list for West Bengal is set to be released on schedule on February 28, excluding the voter documents that need to be referred to judicial officials for review, with additional lists to follow thereafter.
On Saturday, the Calcutta High Court also issued a notice cancelling all judicial officers' leaves in West Bengal until March 9, instructing those currently on leave to return to their respective courts and offices by Monday, with exceptions for emergency medical leaves.
