Srinagar, Dec 30 (NationPress) Multiple districts in Jammu and Kashmir have implemented a prohibition on the use of virtual private networks (VPNs), citing security concerns. This decision comes as authorities ramp up mobile phone surveillance to prevent violations of the ban.
The districts of Kupwara, Kulgam, and Shopian are among the latest to enforce this VPN restriction, threatening legal consequences for individuals who defy the mandate.
In a formal decree, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, the Magistrate of Kupwara, highlighted communications from the police indicating a spike in VPN usage by numerous suspicious Internet users within the district.
'Given that VPN services can be misused for illegal and anti-national endeavors — ranging from inciting unrest to spreading misleading or inflammatory content and orchestrating activities detrimental to public order and national security,' states the order.
The Magistrate has cautioned that any violations will result in legal repercussions and has instructed the police to strictly uphold the order.
Comparable restrictive orders have also been issued by the District Magistrates of Kulgam and Shopian.
Other districts in Jammu and Kashmir have already enacted similar bans, with over ten individuals apprehended for using VPN applications in the past month.
Recently, two men were charged in Doda district for violating prohibitory orders after being discovered using VPNs on their mobile devices. The individuals have been identified as Khalid Abrar and Mohammad Irfan.
The misuse of VPNs entails using these networks for unlawful activities, such as disseminating false information, facilitating crime, circumventing security measures, or accessing restricted content, which threatens public order and national security. This has led authorities, particularly in some regions of India, to impose temporary bans. Additionally, cybercriminals exploit VPNs to conceal malicious actions like identity theft or unauthorized network access, making the selection of a reliable VPN service crucial.
