Kolkata, Nov 3 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, warned the citizens of West Bengal about the CAA camps being orchestrated by the BJP in various regions. These camps are intended to assist non-Muslim refugees arriving from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan with the process of applying for Indian citizenship.
“These CAA camps are being established in West Bengal. Do not fall into their trap. Once you enroll in these camps, your destiny may mirror that of 12 lakh Hindus in Assam, potentially leading you to detention camps,” Banerjee stated during a media briefing on Monday.
He further criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the alarming suicide incidents linked to the fear surrounding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.
“In just a few days since the SIR announcement, several suicide cases have surfaced in West Bengal. We have consistently asserted that Trinamool Congress will escalate the movement to New Delhi if even a single legitimate voter’s name is removed from the voter list. We stand by that pledge,” he expressed.
Banerjee also urged the public not to panic and to utilize the assistance of the Trinamool Congress helpdesks that will be established across the state to aid individuals in completing the SIR enumeration forms.
“Should any voter require legal assistance, Trinamool Congress is prepared to offer that support. If necessary, we will establish a dedicated legal cell for this purpose,” he remarked.
He highlighted that certain BJP leaders are persistently intimidating Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) with threats of imprisonment. “We have alerted the Election Commission of India about this issue, but no action has been taken thus far,” he noted.
Banerjee criticized the ECI for hastily conducting the SIR. “The previous SIR in West Bengal in 2002 took two years to complete, yet this time the commission aims to finish the process in two months. How is this feasible?” he questioned.
The Trinamool Congress plans to hold a significant rally against the SIR in Kolkata on Tuesday, coinciding with the commencement of the first phase of the three-part revision exercise in West Bengal.
