Washington, Oct 10 (NationPress) Shortly after the Nobel Committee chose to overlook US President Donald Trump’s nomination for the peace prize, awarding it instead to Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, Steven Cheung, the White House Director of Communications and Assistant to the President, criticized the Committee for prioritizing politics over peace.
Cheung took to X, stating, “President Trump will persist in forging peace agreements, concluding conflicts, and saving lives. He possesses a humanitarian spirit, and there will never be another leader like him capable of moving mountains through sheer determination. The Nobel Committee has demonstrated that they value politics over peace.”
It is important to note that the nomination deadline was January 31, just 11 days into Trump’s second term, meaning he could still be considered for the award next year.
Trump has repeatedly voiced his interest in the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming he has put an end to several international conflicts.
The discussion gained momentum after both Hamas and Israel endorsed Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan. On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Trump to receive the Nobel Prize, posting on X, “Give @realDonaldTrump the Nobel Peace Prize – he deserves it!”
During his meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Trump criticized former US President Barack Obama for winning the peace prize after “doing nothing.”
“Obama received it for doing nothing. He got elected, and they awarded him the peace prize for having done absolutely nothing but harming our nation. He was not a good president. While Sleepy Joe Biden is the worst, Obama was also not effective. How many months post-election did they award him the peace prize?” he remarked.
Obama was awarded the Nobel in 2009 for his contributions to international diplomacy, a decision that sparked considerable debate. In his acceptance speech, he acknowledged the controversy surrounding the award, stating, “I would be remiss if I did not recognize the significant debate that your generous decision has generated. This is partly because I am at the beginning, and not the conclusion, of my efforts on the global stage.”
Trump reiterated on Thursday that he has been credited with halting eight wars, boasting, “No one in history has resolved eight wars in just nine months. I have done so, which has never happened before.”
